What is Chiropractic?

 

Chiropractic is a health care discipline and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. Chiropractic is controversial and is generally categorized as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) a characterization that many chiropractors reject. The main chiropractic treatment technique involves manual therapy, including manipulation of the spine, other joints, and soft tissues; treatment also includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling. Traditional chiropractic assumes that a vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction interferes with the body's function and its innate intelligence, a vitalistic notion that brings ridicule from mainstream science and medicine.

Your First Visit

 

When you visit a Colorado Chiropractor for the first time, here is what you should expect:

 

* A detailed review of your personal health history. This gives the Chiropractor an opportunity to speak with you personally about your current condition and discuss any past injuries that might be contributing to your symptoms.

 

* A comprehensive, multi-system examination. During this initial examination, your chiropractor will use a variety of tests and techniques to help determine the cause of your symptoms and to diagnose your condition. Depending on your symptoms, they will perform tests to measure range of motion, muscle strength, joint flexibility, nerve and spinal cord function, reflexes, sensation, and circulatory function. The examination should also include a hands-on assessment of spinal alignment and muscle tone. The information collected during this initial examination will allow them to diagnose your condition and provide a baseline to measure your progress as your treatment proceeds.

 

* Further diagnostic testing, such as X-rays, MRIs, or CAT scans, may be ordered, depending on your age, condition, and situation. If you have a complex medical problem, additional testing may be required.

 

* Development of a detailed plan of care. This means that you should leave your first visit with a treatment plan in place that includes the right combination of services to fit your needs, and an understanding of your condition.

 

* Treatment will begin on your first visit and should include the most up-to-date techniques and equipment available.
